All racing will be governed by the Racing Rules of Sailing the prescription of the R.Y.A, and these sailing instructions

4 boats shall constitute a class. 2 boats shall constitute a race.

On Thursday evenings races will be provided for classes, the five-minute signal for the first of these being sounded at 1845hrs .

Courses 
Shall be displayed on the Battery and shall be prefixed with "A", ''B ', “C”, etc.  Course letters and numbers of rounds will be white background with black letters.  Buoys to be left to Port shall be white numbers on a red background.  Buoys to be left to Starboard shall be white numbers on a green background.  All boats should keep east of Town Rock and north of Skate rock.  Boats sailing in cruiser class must keep north of marks K and R and to seaward of 2 and 6 unless the mark is designated a rounding mark of the course.

Starting and Finishing Lines
Shall be a line between the pole at the Shore Battery and the No.1 buoy. A committee boat may be used in which case the line will be between the mast of the committee boat and a designated mark.  An inner limit may be placed which may or may not be on the line.

Signals 

Starting signals
5 min       Warning Signal
4 min       Preparatory Signal
1 min       Preparatory Signal removed
0 min       Start

Recalls
will be signalled by a single sound signal immediately after the start signal.  The class flag will remain dipped until offending boats have started properly.  In the event of a general recall the class involved shall restart following the last scheduled start.

Shortened course 
will be signalled by 2 sound signals. Code Flag "S" will be displayed. All boats finish directly.  Boats should finish through the line from the direction of the previous mark.  No hook finishing.

Time Limits
A time limit of 2 hrs will apply to each class.  In the event of the 1st boat finishing within the time, the limit will be extended for 15 min.

Protests
Protests will be heard by a committee made up of persons not concerned in the protest and a chairman selected from the sailing committee.
Protests must be accompanied by a fee of £10.00, which shall be forfeited if the protest is deemed to be frivolous. Protests must be lodged within one hour of the last boat to finish in the class concerned.

Points
Shall be awarded in accordance with RRS Appendix A Low point system.
A minimum of 4 races excluding discards must be completed to constitute a series.

Handicapping
Portsmouth Yardstick Handicap Numbers will be applied in accordance with the principles in RYA Publication YR2.

Discards
In a series two discards will count except that if less than 7 races are held in a series one discard will count and if less than 5 races are held there will be no discount.

Eligibility 
To be eligible for points in a series the skipper and crew of a boat must be club members. However, guests are permitted on board for a maximum of 2 visits without penalty.   

 NOTES

Boats not starting should keep clear of the starting line.

Insurance
All craft must carry 3rd Party Insurance, minimum of £1,000,000. Failure to do so will result in suspension from Killyleagh Yacht Club. A representative of the Committee may request proof of valid insurance.

CLUB SAFETY RULES

All boat users are advised, in their own interests and those of others, to adhere to the following rules:
Cancellation of races
Racing will not take place where the Race Officer decides that conditions are unsafe.

Dinghy Classes
Life jackets must be worn at all times whether racing or not, and be properly secured to the body.

All Other Boat Users
Life jackets must be provided for each person aboard and should be used at the discretion of the helmsman. It is recommended that life jackets be used at all times, and especially in foul weather.

All boats must carry
1. A tow rope not less than 6 metres.
2. Adequate bailing facilities.
3. Self-propelling mechanism    (i.e. paddle or engine).
4. Anchor.

Hull Buoyancy
It is recommended that extra buoyancy for the hull is provided to all boats where possible (additional to dinghy classes) as a safety measure to both crew and boat in the event of filling.
